Musicians Interviews (Fernando Martin, Guatemala)


Lads! on today musicians interviews, I am proud to present, Guatemala's secret weapon: Fernando Martin! really great drummer, I mean, really! His playing is in the level of the Gods. Very punctual and very nice person. Ok, let's start the interviews

First of all, Please describe yourself
Fernando Martin, born in 1971 in Guatemala. Studied with private teachers in Guatemala and did the one year program at Musicians Institute, Hollywood, CA USA 1994 - 1995

How do you get into music? How long have you been playing?
I got into music listening to a lot of music, non stop, Drums got my attention everytime. I started to get lesson when I was 14, it was 34 years ago. 

Do you have role model or favorite musicians to look up to?
Vinnie Colauita

What instrument do you have and play?
I have Tama Starclassic birch, Tama Starclassic maple, Ayotte, Le Soprano and Noble & Cooley. 

What band do you play now?
I play in Various bands (Fusion, Classic Rock and Progressive rock)

What it means to be a Drummer?
To me, Happiness.

Do you play Traditional grip or Match Grip? could you tell the purpose of grip in your drumming?
I use Traditional grip when I play lots of doubles (that's the reason), matched when playing rock.

How do you build your independence in drumset? what kind of practice did you do?
Nowadays I'm working in playing septuplets with the hand alternating, while doing groups of three with the bass drum. And playing paradiddles in quintuplets keeping the quarter note with the bass drum.

If someone wants to start playing drums, what advice will you give Him/Her?
If you really interested in drums to make music, GO FOR IT, If you interested in fame, Please do something else.

very few records but a lot of singles

Follow your passion!

What is your biggest achievement so far?
 See Dave Weckl learn the drum parts I had created, so He could play those tunes in a presentation with the musicians i had recorded with.
